Anchor Lofou

First Things First

Setting things straight

“Cyprus is all about the sun and the sea “.

“Visit Cyprus only in the summer”. Wrong my wanderers. Cyprus is an all time must visit island that combines sea and mountain scenery any time of the year.

Now about this wandering! Lofou is a small village in Limassol.

From Larnaca (my car engine always starts from there) is about 1hour and 15 minutes drive.

Summer in Lofou

A hidden gem

When the heat wave usually strikes, during July and August in Cyprus, then it’s the time to hit the road and head to the mountains.

The occasion of visiting Lofou for the first time was for a festival called Fengaros where different music stages and activities take place for two days in a row usually in the first days of August. You can follow the event organisers on facebook if you wish to find when is the next festival.  They tend to host the festival in a different village every year or so.

The place was full of young people that were staying overnight to a designated camping area. A unique well organized event worth visiting. But what amazed me the most was the village itself.

A hidden gem in the mountains you can loose yourself in the small alleys. Don’t forget your camera and maybe your light jacket if you stay overnight.

Tip

Don't forget your camera and maybe your light jacket if you are staying overnight.

Winter in Lofou

Traditional food experience

In a cold winter day, just wear your boots and hoodie and head to Lofou. For lunch or dinner visit the Lofou Taverna. Always check beforehand the opening hours just to be safe. The Lofou Taverna has a cosy traditional surroundings, tasty food and good house wine which makes your wandering in Lofou so much worth it.

Food recomendation: order mezedes! It is "small" plates of traditional dishes so you can taste almost everything on the menu. Food portions, as you will notice in most other places in Cyprus, are more than enough!

If you are up for some story telling  the owner of the Taverna would enjoy to share some stories with you about his taverna and the village. If he is in a good mood he might event play his bouzouki for you. Nothing more beautiful than listening to some bouzouki next to the fire place. Winter bliss!

Live music at the Taverna takes place on Saturdays only!

On your way to Lofou

Agios Amvrosios Village

If you are organising a road trip to Lofou then you should definitely include a stop at Agios Amvrosios for some traditional Cyprus coffee, a must try, at a tradional "Kafene" (greek word for cypriot coffee place).

Coffee recommendation: have your coffee break at tavern "Sikamia" - amazing view!

Stroll around and visit the village church.

If you wish to have lunch in Agios Amvrosios sometimes the 'Taverna' organises live music for the tourists.

In Ayios Amvrosios you can also visit the wineries of Zampartas and Gaia for wandering and of course…wine tasting

Tip

Old people usually stare persistently to “foreigners” who arrive in their village. “Kalimera” (goodmoring) is all you need to receive a smile and an invitation to join them. Locals especially in villages are by nature curious to know your whereabouts and to share their stories!

Overnight in Lofou

Accomodation

If you want to stay for a night or two in Lofou I recommend Apokryfo for solitude in traditional surroundings. For more budgeted travelling there is also a youth hostel.
